Backpacking for Beginners - Everything You Need to Know About Backpacking

If you're new to backpacking or haven't done it in a long time read here for all the basic information you'll need to get you out the door and onto a great trail out in nature.

Your first step involves planning. Planning where you are going, how long you are going (a one night or two nighter would be a great start) and making sure you tell someone of your itinerary. Keep in mind the buddy system, never go backpacking alone, especially if you are new to this great sport.

Research where you want to go, the time of year you are heading there and what to expect the weather and temperatures to be like both during the day and at night time.

If you don't have a partner willing or able to go with you then consider heading out with a planned group which are easy to find at your local outdoor store. Many hiking and backpacking groups are organized this way and it's a super way to meet fellow hikers, learn more about backpacking, make new friends and have a wonderful experience.

Using the right outdoor hiking gear. This one is equally important. What you have researched in the planning stage is critical to the type of hiking clothes you are going to need and having the right backpacking backpack, hiking essentials including food, first aid and safety equipment, sleeping and tent gear is necessary.

Making a list based on your needs is a very good idea and something many experienced backpackers use to prep their backpacks plus it really helps avoid forgetting important essentials.

Dressing using the layering approach is also a great way to be prepared for any type of weather or conditions you may encounter.

Make sure your backpack does not weigh more than approximately 25% of your ideal body weight. This will help maximize your comfort and avoid pain in your back, shoulders and neck areas. Packing your backpack properly will also help with this.

Avoid dehydration. You will need more liquids, especially water when you're out on the trail. Make sure you have plenty of water with you and a water filtration system to pump clean drinking water at every stop when you need to. Check the area beforehand to make sure there are water sources you will be able to access before heading out.

Whether you're in great physical condition or not, hiking consumes a lot of energy, especially with a heavy pack on your back. Keep this in mind and don't be afraid to take breaks frequently, go slowly and enjoy the journey. It's not all about "bagging the next peak".

Having the right outdoor hiking gear, the right attitude and some common sense planning will create a lifetime of memories for you as you become an experienced hiker.
